Project Location
This project will take you to the heart of Uganda where you get involved in meaningful volunteer work. The trip starts and ends in Uganda’s capital Kampala. Volunteers joining the program will be based in different districts as selected on the preferred locations. One of the most common locations is Mbarara, city south of the capital, Kampala. Mbarara is 271.4km from the capital Kampala, which is a 5-hour road drive.
Facilities within the hospitals and clinics are basic and treatments are sometimes not of the standard we would expect in developed world. Doctors on Mission International through its Volunteer for Africa Medical Missions program supports small community health centres in rural and hard to reach areas and also has a standing partnership with large government hospitals in Uganda. We offer short- and long-term medical volunteering placements in hospitals, clinics, outreach centres and mobile clinics.
Medical Licenses for Medical Practitioners
All qualified medical practitioners will have to pay for a temporary licence with the regulatory bodies in Uganda; i.e. Uganda Medical & Dental practitioners Council for doctors/surgeons/dentists, allied Health professionals council of Uganda for diploma medical courses and laboratory practitioners, and Uganda Nurses & midwives council for Nurses and midwives.
Arrival and Airport Pickup
After you have booked and confirmed your placement, please book your flights to arrive at Entebbe International Airport (the only international airport in Uganda). Our Coordinator will arrange a pickup for you from the airport in Entebbe at agreed time and they will drive you to the volunteer entry homes on the outskirts of Kampala.
Orientation
Orientation and Placement will be done the day following your arrival. Generally, your volunteer orientation is an overview of the project's mission, expectations and introduction to the local community and project site. Following your arrival in Uganda you will be given a presentation by the co-coordinating project team to prepare you for the work you will be doing.
Your Role and Schedule
Your exact role and schedule within the hospital or clinic at program will be determined by your level of medical experience and qualifications and in discussions with us prior to arrival.
Accommodation
Volunteers are provided accommodation in our beautiful volunteer house or in a homestay accommodation managed by the local coordinating team. Three meals a day (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner) are provided to the participants from Monday – Sunday. The accommodations are neat and clean. Accommodation is shared amongst volunteers on the 'same gender sharing' basis rooms. Wi-Fi internet, warm water is provided by Doctors on Mission International.
The accommodations are close to useful amenities like banks, ATM's, currency exchanges, restaurants, cafes and shopping places. All placements are around 5 – 30 minutes from the accommodation. At some point volunteers might be on the move and hence we suggest also bringing a sleeping mat and sleeping bag/pillow for travel and weekends away on adventures. Bathrooms are usually shared. There is a lounge area for relaxing, reading, or watching movies.
Visas
Visitors to Uganda must obtain a visa on arrival to Uganda or from one of the Ugandan diplomatic missions, unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries. All visitors must hold a passport valid for 6 months. Uganda began issuing electronic visas (e-Visa) on 1 July 2016. Passengers who have been issued an e-visa must travel with a printed e-visa confirmation. Visa on arrival: Electronic visas replaced the visa on arrival facility.
Weekend and Free Time
Over the weekends or evenings, participants are free to eat out and explore the different delights that Uganda has to offer. We arrange city day tours and long-weekend safaris. No matter what your interests are, there is always something for everyone to enjoy!
