This amazing 8 day/7 night itinerary combines one of the most iconic properties for families and small group retreats in Kenya together with perhaps the most remarkable community immersion with the Maasai. The first part of this experience takes place in Laikipia whist the second in Kiserian just outside of Nairobi.
Nilotica is the most recent and stunning offering from El Karama Lodge. It has been designed for exclusive use for families and small groups. The Enchanting and Private Nilotica’s cottages - Peace, Immersion and Connection
Cottage 1
Cottage One is family sized with two large interconnecting bedrooms which sleep up to 6 with a shared ensuite bathroom between them. It’s large, beautiful and light bathroom has two sinks and an expansive shower and an outdoor plunge tub overlooking the salt lick where the wildlife comes to visit. Every day the wildlife visits the salt lick and Nilotica is surrounded by wrap around verandas which provide views of the conservancy, the Aberdares mountains and the Ewaso Nyiro river.
Cottage 2
Cottage 2 is river facing and has a large double/twin bedroom with plenty of space for an extra bed if needed. Surrounded by a yoga-style veranda it has a stone patio for private family moments. The cottage is favoured by the bush buck and dik dik as well as the magical bird life for which the lodge is known. A perfect place for an intergenerational family on an amazing Kenyan experience.
A Great Choice of Activities
Guests at Nilotica House have their own game drive vehicle with a private guide. And with a broad range of activities to choose from, the emphasis is getting out and enjoying the freedom of this incredible wildlife and safari area. Parents and children can opt for a four-wheel safari, or guided game walks or half day game drives and night drives. Bush meals can be had under the stars, while fishing and fly camping, garden tours and and farm visits are great entertainers. And one cannot forget that filming and photography and specialized children’s activities are all part of what makes Nilotica so special. And it doesn’t end there for there is clay sculpting, tracking and cast making available for everyone to indulge in.

A large patio is a meeting place for a family group or group of friends enjoying Nilotica and a great place to catch up and reflect on the day’s activities. From Laikipia, You Return to Nairobi for Your Maasai Experience
The next 2 days will be spent in the company of one of the oldest and most noble races, the Maasai. For this part of your incredible vacation, you will head back to Nairobi on your private charter flight. And on the following day and by helicopter, you will take a short journey to a Maasai village where you have a cultural immersion in all things Maasai. With the charm and humour of your hosts, you will see life from a different perspective. The journey will give you an incredible view of the landscapes that are part of Kenya. This experience has you meeting a young moran(warrior) whose perspective on his cultural identify will probably amaze you.
You will spend overnight at a homestead close to the village that exudes warmth and coziness. And where you can once again retreat within an exclusive use homestead where you own personal chef will be on hand to see to you every need. And in the evening you will have a visit from a local clan of Maasai who will entertain you will the traditional rhythmic songs and dance for which they are so well known. This is an interactive, personal, and intimate insight into what it’s like living in a traditional society.
A Song and Dance Welcome
Upon entering the village, you will receive a traditional song and dance welcome. It’s a great introduction to Maasai life and the rhythm and beat of their music is infectious. And being dressed as a Maasai for your day is also part of the experience and you will also be adorned with the gender specific adornments that the Maasai are known for.
Sitting Down with Your Host in His Manyatta
The day’s events and discussions with the young moran will be conducted in his traditional home (called a manyatta). The discussion will cover:
- The stages of life or rites of passage that every male Maasai child will go through until they enter ‘manhood’ where they become a ‘moran’
- The cultural rituals, customs and practices that are associated with the rights of passages and most notably those that have to do with becoming a moran
- Your host will also outline what he had to endure when taken to the bush by the village elders in preparation for the upcoming rituals
- The rituals of courting in Maasai society and the role of families in the process
- The obligations that come with marriage regarding family, the clan and broader community and.
Your Moran Host Demonstrates His Skills
A daily life spent herding the Maasai’s herds of cattle, goats and sheep inevitably means contact with wildlife predators. The young Maasai will show you his skills of defending himself and his herd. And over the day there will be various discussions and demonstrations about all things Maasai.
Your Overnight Accommodation - An Amazing Homestead and Your Own Chef
Your overnight accommodation is 10 minutes from the Maasai village where you have spent the day. This amazing 4 bedroom, all on-suite property has spectacular views over the nearby mountains. It’s the perfect place to relax for the evening and to enjoy the views and where you will have dinner. And to make it a memorable day, you have the services of your own chef who will prepare your dinner as you relax. You have the entire property for your exclusive use.
A Twilight Visit
And before you sit down for dinner you have one last treat for the day. You will be visited at twilight by a group of Maasai singers from the local tribe who will give you a 20-minute rendition of melodious songs. These songs capture the essence of the Maasai. And when all the singing is done, your dinner awaits. Time to kick back and relax with a glass of wine and your time is your own
A Leisurely Breakfast Begins the Day
Your chef is on hand to prepare breakfast to kick off the day to a great start and it's a leisurely and relaxed start to the day. Breakfast is mostly taken on the outside terrace which has magnificent views of the nearby mountains. It's a great panoramic vista that really captures the essence of the life and environment of the local Maasai tribes. As a memento of your visit, you will receive a handmade Maasai wristband that will hold fond memories for you of your time with your Maasai host. And in addition to this, your Maasai host will display a selection of Maasai jewellery and curios which have been made by the villagers. And after heading back to Nairobi around lunchtime, its another helicopter trip back to Nairobi and the end of your incredible vacation.
