A "must do" while in Nairobi

Our visit to Kenya would not have been complete without the day trip we made to meet and learn from a local Maasai family, while staying in Nairobi. The trip was an easy and interesting drive out of the city, and the day was extremely meaningful. The experience was private and personal, and we left feeling like we made connections we did not expect. We were greeted by One Horizon staff on the highway and followed them through unmarked back roads to the family's homes - a traditional Maasai village. We spent the day with the family (3 generations) talking, singing, dancing, beading, cooking, eating together and learning about the Maasai culture, traditions, games, medical practices, rites of passage, and modern concerns and considerations. The experience felt spontaneous and genuine; the family was welcoming and invited our questions. We all felt we learned far more than expected about the many different ways people choose to live in the modern world, and how the Maasai in particular keep their culture and traditions alive. This day was key to our understanding of Kenya and the people who live there. Well worth the time!

Three days that we'll remember for years

We spent three days in Nairobi with One Horizon Africa Foundation and did three of their experiences: Maasai Magic, Empowering Mothers, and Go Granny Go. Maasai Magic took us to Daniel's family who is doing something quietly remarkable: holding on to his culture while also pushing his community to change what needs changing. He encourages his community about educating the girls, giving daughters the same rights as sons, and preparing his community for the modern world without losing who they are. The members of his family, Ripsa, Risa, Maggie, and the two little ones, welcomed us like old friends and shared so many stories. Go Granny Go was the one we didn't expect to hit us so hard. We sat and listened to Rosemary, Helen, and Beatrice. Their stories are, honestly, sad ones, loss, hardship, and being left to carry everything alone. But these women are not sad people; they are some of the most resilient, funny (their laughter is contagious), dignified people we have ever met. Each of them supports an entire family, often grandchildren, on their own. One Horizon's support has changed what's possible for them, and that change reaches everyone who depends on them, you can see it. Empowering Mothers introduced us to Carole, Leah, and Teresa. What struck us is how familiar their old situations were, women who depend on men financially have small lives and that's true everywhere in the world. No say in anything, nowhere to go if things turn violent, health that gets ignored, children who go hungry and don't make it to school. All three women lived some version of that, and today they run their households. They earn, they decide, they've raised children who are in school, who have gone on to build independent lives of their own. They're passing on not just money but a way of thinking and watching that made the whole trip worth it. Our guide, Mary, made everything easy and warm, the families loved her and treats her like family. She clearly loves this work, and you can tell she knows she's part of something that matters. That energy is contagious. And kudos to Colin, who started the foundation. A lot of us talk about wanting to make a difference, very few actually do it. He did. What we valued most was that none of this felt staged. We heard real stories from each family, in their own words, and we cooked and ate together. It's a foundation with a genuinely good mission, and you can see the results in the people themselves living healthier, happier, independent, and lifting others as they go. It was great to hear the women and grannies identifying women who needs help and bringing them into the fold, amplifying the impact. Our child made friends with the children in every family we visited. We're going back to Kenya in the next few years, and we’ll be visiting these families again. It feels like we have people to go back to. Thank you, One Horizon. Truly.

Illuminating, culturally enriching and inspiring

Our One Horizon Africa experiences—“Go Granny Go” with Kikuyu grandmothers Helen and Beatrice, and “Maasai Magic” with a Maasai family—were among the most fascinating and meaningful experiences we have had in our travels around the world. Our day with Helen and Beatrice was illuminating, emotional, and inspiring. We were fascinated by their stories, saddened by the hardships they had endured, and deeply inspired by Beatrice’s remarkable life journey and resilience. Their small pig-raising operation is not what Americans might picture when hearing the term “pig farm.” They are raising a few pigs to help provide for their families in an economy and job market where opportunities for family members are limited. Seeing firsthand what this modest enterprise means to their families gave us a much deeper appreciation for their determination and resourcefulness. Our day with the Maasai family was equally illuminating and inspiring. They graciously opened their home to us and shared how they raise cattle in the mountain areas to support their family. We learned about Maasai culture, traditions, family life, and the opportunities and challenges they face. It was a personal and authentic experience that went far beyond what we could have learned on a conventional tour. We heartily endorse both experiences. Together, they provide a rare glimpse into the lives and journeys of two families from Kenya’s Kikuyu and Maasai communities. One Horizon Africa greatly enriched our time in Kenya and gave us new depth, insight, and appreciation for how families from two distinct cultures live, persevere, and support one another. These are much more than excursions—they are genuine human experiences that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

A beautiful, profound experience that changes the way you see your life and what truly matters

People can find happiness in any circumstances—it is, in many ways, a matter of how we choose to see life. This has always been one of my personal mottos, although I often find it difficult to remind myself of it in the midst of everyday life. The experience organized by One Horizon in Kenya was a powerful and very real reminder of this belief—one that I will carry with me for a long time. Through one of One Horizon’s projects, I had the opportunity to meet people who, like people everywhere, face challenges in their daily lives. Yet despite those challenges, they continue to stay positive and do their best to build a better life not only for themselves, but also for their families, neighbors, and communities. Listening to their stories and witnessing their resilience was deeply moving. Their experiences, together with the incredible support and commitment of One Horizon, gave us the opportunity to pause and reflect on what truly matters in life. I am deeply grateful to One Horizon for giving me this opportunity. It was more than simply a memorable experience—it was a meaningful reminder of the values that are easy to lose sight of in our busy everyday lives. I hope that many more people will have the opportunity to visit one of One Horizon’s projects, spend time with the people and communities they support, hear their stories, and experience for themselves the same sense of connection, gratitude, and reflection that I took away from this journey.

A Must Do Experience in Nairobi

I first did 2 full day experiences with One Horizon 6 years ago on a visit to Kenya. Those experiences were so inspirational and such a privilege to listen to real people tell their amazing stories. I recently returned to Kenya with my daughter and stayed extra time so that I could return to the places I had visited and share the experience. The work Colin and One Horizon are doing is so inspirational helping people become self sufficient. I revisited Helen & Rosemary from the Granny Project and they are such strong women and their life stories need to be heard. We helped prepare lunch which we shared whilst listening to their stories. We then revisited Daniel and his family in his Massai village. It was like being welcomed home. The difference in those 6 years was amazing. The trees and shrubs had all grown, there were more huts, Daniel's son is now married with 2 children and could not believe it, they have flushing toilets. We sang and danced and listened to their very moving stories. If you are in Nairobi this is a must do experience. As I only had 1 day I did The Resilient Women of Kenya which combined the 2 experiences.

A Heart-Warming Day of Connection

We were made to feel incredibly welcome and shared lots of laughs playing games with the children during their break. What really stood out was how similar the curriculum is to what our own children are learning at school. It was powerful for the children on both sides to recognise how much they have in common. Our Sincere Gratitude

I am writing to express our sincere gratitude following our recent safari trip to Kenya. My husband and I had the pleasure of spending a day with one of your representatives, Solomon, who took us on an unforgettable visit to a Maasai Village. From the moment Solomon picked us up from the hotel, he was warm, professional and incredibly knowledgeable. He made us feel completely at ease and ensured that every part of the experience was thoughtful and personal. During our time at the village, we had the privilege of spending time with a local family who shared their life stories with us. One of the most touching moments was learning that thanks to the support they receive through One Horizon, they are now able to send their daughter to college. A Life-Changing Experience for Families and Teens: One Horizon is Beyond a Tour Company

Traveling to Kenya with my two teenagers, I wanted more than a vacation. I hoped for something that would open their hearts and minds. One Horizon delivered far more than I could have imagined. From the moment we were picked up at the airport, we were met with warmth and personal care. The founder of One Horizon, greeted us himself and then continued to meet us at every single point of our journey. That kind of personal presence is rare. He and his team made us feel not like clients, but like welcomed guests in a shared mission. What makes One Horizon exceptional is their deep connection to the communities they support. We visited schools they run in Nairobi, where children receive large, nourishing meals. A simple thing, but life-changing for many families. We met grandmas who have been gifted pigs, an income-generating program that helps them feed and support their families with dignity and independence. These are not charity stops. They are real, human connections to programs that are thoughtfully built and clearly working. Our time with the Maasai (Mei) tribe was something my children and I will carry forever. We were invited into their homes and culture, and our teenage children were treated with such generosity and respect. The stories, traditions, and open-hearted welcome gave us insight into a way of life that is rich in wisdom. Our main guide Solomon, and our additional guide Mary, were outstanding. Knowledgeable, funny, and insightful. They shared personal stories that helped us understand Kenya not just as a destination, but as a place of deep resilience and beauty. We also had the privilege of traveling with a junior guide for part of our tour, who added even more dimension with their own cultural perspective. Everything from logistics to learning was handled with grace, professionalism, and kindness. The bus was comfortable and clean, our driver was consistently on time and attentive, and the experience never felt rushed or transactional. As a parent, watching my teenagers engage with real issues—poverty, culture, sustainability—and walk away not with pity, but with respect and inspiration is the greatest gift this trip could have given. If you’re considering a trip that combines meaningful travel with unforgettable cultural connection, especially with children or teens, One Horizon is simply the best.

Pulling people out of poverty.

Today some of us went to Go Granny Go a program sponsored by One Horizon Africa that helps pull families out of poverty. They give him impoverished African grandmothers opportunities to support themselves. The Go Granny Go program sets up grandmothers supporting their grandchildren as pig farmers. One of the stories that was told by Rosemary is that the most money she had ever had in her life at one time was $10. Through the Go Granny Go program she was able to sell two pregnant pigs and get $800. She was able to fix up her home get beds for her grandchildren and get electricity and running water which she never had before.

Our favourite day from our holiday

We got to visit a family of Masai outside Nairobi, who were repairing their manyattas. We were picked up at our hotel by two lovely staff of One Horizon, Solomon and Mary. We enjoyed their company and talking politics as we were given a lift to the village. When we arrived, we met one of the founders, Reesa and Daniel (family). We were given a warm welcome and it was clear that Colin and the family have a lot of respect for each other. After walking to the village, they performed a traditional dance and got us involved, which was good fun. Then we tried to help with the manyattas (emphasis on tried). Manyatta building is a skill and it took us a while to learn to apply the mud without if falling off later. Still, there was a lot of laughter and we enjoyed it immensely. We also spent a good amount of time talking and learning about the differences between Masai and UK culture, some of the uses of different plants and how things have changed for Daniel and his family, they are great people. Before we left, we bought some hand made jewellery and a belt, which we felt was fairly priced. It felt like we had really made some friends by the time we were done and both of us were sad to leave. We will definitely pay another visit if we are ever back in Nairobi. It was such an enriching experience and a day we will always remember. After we drove back, Mary and Solomon drove us to some curio shops, so we could pick up a few souvenirs, as it was the second to last day of the holiday. They were very kind to do this, as they did not have to. We felt so welcomed by everyone involved and honestly had the best day.

A Unique and Special Experience We Will Treasure!

Truly a heart warming experience with a Masai Family who opened up their home, culture and traditions to us. Giving us insights to the way they live and also the changes to their traditions due to modern times. We spent Christmas with them and also got the chance to share with them some of our culture and traditions. It was a well planned day and everything went smoothly. Our tour hosts Mary & Solomon picked us up on time and were so friendly and down to earth. The Masai family was amazing and had loads of stories to share with us and lots of activities to do together. Heartfelt inspiring experience

My most warm thank you to the One Horizon team. Not only for incredible work and the positive change I could witness in the grammas lives but also for the open and fast communication with Colin from the start to the end. A magical life changing day

What a wonderful day we had start to finish. Alex and Mary picked us up at our hotel it was the first tour we’ve went on during our stay where the guides were already waiting in the parking lot ready to greet us early. We had a lovely chat on the way up to the village and once we arrived we were warmly welcomed by Daniel and his family. We were truly blown away by the knowledge they have of the land, the connection to nature and how they’ve kept their traditional culture alive in modern day. We played, cooked, ate, learned to defend ourselves from various animals, learned and tasted some of the herbs they use, sang, danced and made jewellery together. Not only did we learn about their culture but they were very interested in learning about where we come from. The happiness they radiate is very contagious. We ended the day with Daniel and his son giving us Masai names. The entire day was very special and the photo memories Alex captured for us are so beautiful. On top of this being the best experience we had in Nairobi, the work one horizon is doing is inspiring. We really enjoyed hearing about all the different ways they help the community here in Kenya on our drive back. It felt amazing knowing not only did our money go to a very good place but we had the best day of our trip. I recommend if you can only do one thing in Nairobi choose an experience with One Horizon, you won’t regret it!

The variety of the experiences was over the top. I enjoyed and learned from all of them.

I was fortunate to travel with One Horizon for almost 2 weeks this winter. The lodging, activity level, transportation, choices of experiences, and most importantly the guides were absolutely amazing. This trip with One Horizon immersed me into the cultures of Nairobi, neighboring areas, specific projects aimed at supporting women and children, and ended with a spectacular 4 day safari in the Maasai Mara. Exceptional team, experience and lifelong memories made

I simply cannot write enough about how thankful I am to the entire team at One Horizon. I travelled to Kenya on short-notice, and on a whim thought I would try to fulfill a lifelong dream of sitting with Maasai and learning some specific things about their Moran culture. I reached out to One Horizon, and within an hour had a friendly and supportive reply. By the following morning my plans were made and my dream was to become a reality. On the day of my trip, I was greeted with a highly professional and friendly team, on time and ready to roll. Our ride was filled with bright conversation and laughter. Upon arriving at the location of our time with the Maasai family, we were once again greeted with warm smiles and the kindest welcomes. Our day with the family was just amazing. While they offer their routine for guests, they were happy to veer off course a bit to learn about myself and my 18 year old son (traveling along with me), and spend more time on my questions and interests. The sharing, wisdom and connection with the family was beyond words, as if I were sitting with my own relatives. I don't feel like I visited a group of people for a great experience; rather I was brought to a family who took my son and I in, showed us their culture, told us of their challenges and their joy in life. As well, they wanted to learn about us, our home, our family, our seasons. At the end of the day, we departed as friends, embracing one another and promising to meet again. Can you ask for more? In closing, I want to thank Colin and his incredible team at One Horizon for an experience that went far beyond my expectations. I know this day will be carried for the rest of my son's life, and we will both recall our new Maasai family friends and model their warmth and kindness in our own hearts. Inspiring Journey

This was so much more than a tour, it was an inspiring journey. My time with One Horizon Africa and the grannies was an experience filled with immense joy and meaning. I initially booked Go Granny Go because as a new grandmother and aspiring farmer, I thought it would be great to meet others who share similar identities. The experience was so much more than I imagined. There was an amazing energy from the time Solomon and Mary picked me up and throughout the entire day. Helen, Beatrice, and Carol put so much love into showing me around, sharing stories, and cooking lunch that I couldn’t help but dance and sing along. During our time together I was overcome with deep gratitude when hearing the life experiences of the grannies. They are an inspiring group. Resilience, perseverance, courage and strength are just a few words to describe the lives of these amazing women and the energy I departed with. It felt good to contribute to enriching the livelihoods of generations to come in a purposeful way. Thank you to the One Horizon Africa team and the grannies for creating such a meaningful experience and heartfelt memories.

Outstanding experience

Today we got to visit the drop in facility for street kids in one part of Nairobi run by One Horizon. What a privilege. We watched the kids perform some welcome items, visited their classrooms and read some stories about some Australian kids and animals, helped prepare lunch and serve it to them and participated in an art activity and face painting. Watching happy faces and learning about their plight and the great work of One Horizon from its founder and being hosted by Mary and Solomon was fantastic. An exquisite experience

As a European, this experience was absolutely fantastic! The people I met, the things I’ve heard and seen, all was overwhelming. It was also definitely an energy exchange, a great communication and a lovely atmosphere overall. Everyone who visits Kenya should do this

We had our One Horizon experience on the first day of our two-week Safari holiday in Kenya. Visiting the grandmothers and learning about their challenges was one of the best parts of the whole trip. We highly recommend this to anyone visiting – it gives you a different perspective on the great people of Kenya and the challenges they face. We visited two grandmothers and their pig farm project on the outskirts of Kenya. Our family with two teenage children were given an amazing welcome by our hosts. We were shown the pigs, the biogas plant and all the other improvements that One Horizon have helped with. We helped to feed the pigs and make chapatis which was hands-on and great fun. We then had a chance to hear the full story from our hosts and how, with help from One Horizon, they have turned their lives around. Highly advised for anyone.

But what made my time in Kenya unforgettable was the Kenyan people I met. And among the most memorable people was Rosemary, the hardworking grandmother who proudly told me about her life and success as a pig farmer which was started with the help of One Horizon. Rosemary was a wonderful hostess serving me cake and Kenyan tea, chatting, singing and dancing a little while preparing a delicious celebratory lunch together. This experience on the Light on the Horizon tour was a great first day in Kenya. I was also fortunate enough to spend my last day in Nairobi with an utterly amazing group of women at the Living Positively Women’s Empowerment Center. After receiving a diagnosis that marked a distinctive change in their life, they had to let go of who they were before, what they thought their lives would be and, very often, the people they loved and who had shaped them to date. With a blanket of darkness threatening to drown them, they swam away from the dark and towards the light with every ounce of strength they possessed. They were met with beacons of hope and love – the outstretched hands, the welcoming smiles, the songs and dances, the open listening hearts of other women who welcomed them to this new space. Who held them when they felt as if they might sink against the pull below them. These beautiful women may be seeking empowerment, but the feminine power they already possess in abundance is what will change the world in the decades to come. To spend a day in their circle was one of the great privileges of my life.

A very special experience

We had the chance to spend a day with a Masai family whilst in Nairobi, organised by One Horizon. It was a very special and moving experience that we highly recommend to all that are in Nairobi. It is very well organised, from the pick up and drop off to the hotel, to the planned activities on the day, with the Masai family. They were absolutely lovely, welcoming us in their home and sharing with us their ways of life, being equally curious and interested in other cultures and customs as we were in theirs. Best tour in Kenya

This was the MOST IMPACTFUL thing I did on my whole tour of Africa. I loved meeting these amazing women and learning about the beautiful community of support they have built for one another. This tour is a must! To experience the lives of the Kenyan people in this most authentic way is priceless. I loved hearing about these women’s stories. They are a true testament of strength and triumph rising above all adversity. One Horizon, a local non-profit, has helped these women see another side of life, a way out of poverty to care for their families. It’s about women empowerment and the ability to fend for themselves through entrepreneurship. Learning how to make chapattis was so much fun. It felt like how I learned to cook with my own grandmother. We ate, laughed, and listened to each other’s stories. I definitely bonded with these women, and in complete awe of their growth and progress through the foundation. Keep up the great work!

What a marvellous day….

My daughter and I were in Kenya for a holiday, going on Safari and we added a few extra days in Nairobi to explore. We were lucky to come across One Horizon who support the ladies at Living Positive- Kenya centre. The centre provides an 18 month program for ladies who are struggling in all aspects of their lives and simple can have nothing!! We spent the day listening to the ladies, who were very brave in opening up about the past and sharing their stories….. We then shared with them their skills, that they had learnt since being at the centre……. craft, baking, making clocks etc.,….We could have sat for hours, chatting to the ladies, as they made us feel very welcome. The lady who runs the centre is called Mary, and my instincts told me as soon as I met her, that everyone calls her MUM…… and within minutes of her talking, you could see and feel why…… She is the Mum to so many of these amazing ladies, and Mary gives them strength and hope……One lady said to me” if you have Hope – you have everything” – and how very true she is. Whilst spending the day with the ladies, we made chapatti’s and cooked lunch together, which we all then sat and enjoyed around the table. This day will stay with me for the rest of my life and even since I have been back home, I think of them often and wish them peace, courage, strength and hope…….. Thank you One Horizon for supporting these wonderful ladies and giving us the chance to spend the day with them, over lunch. One Horizon run out of the ordinary trips, which gives you a better understanding of the culture of Kenya, and not through rose coloured glasses. If you are thinking of going….. Please do, they will make you feel extremely welcome.

One Horizon Africa is such a great organization who helps poor communities establish sustainable food sources here in Kenya. Our guide, Carol took us to a village of the Kikuyu tribe on the outskirts of Nairobi to get a first-hand look at their way of life. We sat with them, cooked and ate with them, they told us stories (translated from Swahili by our guide), they braided my hair, they hugged us and wouldn’t let go. It was a heart-warming day. In Kenya, many people live in a state of absolute poverty. If a woman cannot feed her children, she either gives them away as servants, the girls are forced into marriage / sold to a man (for about $50), or they are left with the grandmother. So… many Kenyan grandmothers are raising their grandkids with very little resources. This organization helps them to escape the poverty cycle by giving them a few piglets, training them to raise pigs and run their business… and after selling a few litters of piglets, they start to gain traction out of poverty. They even have a local veterinarian who services the animals. Our tour money bought 5 piglets for a grandmother who has been on the waiting list for a long time. Pigs breed quickly- one litter of 11-14 piglets every 3 months, so these 5 piglets will literally pull her entire family line out of poverty now and for generations to come. If you are coming to Nairobi, this is something you can’t miss.

Heart Warming tour

Our final tour in Kenya was a visit to a pig farm by Colin Murray, founder and unsung hero saving the vulnerable Kenyan elderly from poverty. We were overwhelmed and touched by Colins’ deeds and his commitment to help the poor and vulnerable of Kenya. This was more than just a tour fee, it was a life changing donation and an uplifting experience for these elderly women and their communities. Colin’s charity ‘One Horizon’ helps by unlocking the shackles of poverty and eliminating anxiety and fear for marginalised elders living in disadvantaged communities. They do this by raising and selling piglets via a local co-op at guaranteed prices, thus generating cash for their communities. Most interesting is that the biogas (methane) from the back-end of these pigs, produces enough fuels for cooking and heating for a community of 300 people. This is achieved as the pig manure is shovelled into a large tent that produces fermented methane gas which is then piped to the local community. This eliminates the need to illegally chop down trees and pay exorbitant gas prices. We willingly sponsored a methane tent. This tour will change the way you think and the proceeds are directed to uplifting living standards for a community. Highly Recommended

An inspirational - and enjoyable - day

What an incredible experience! I took part in the Farm to Feast tour and was still thinking about it days afterwards. The charity One Horizon uses the money from its tours to provide Grandmas with piglets or chickens which they can breed and then sell. This enables these women to generate their own income and escape from crippling poverty. Our group met 4 Grandmas who have benefited from this project. We were picked up from our hotels and taken to the homes of these women – a rare and rewarding opportunity to see how local people live. The Grandmas were incredibly warm and welcoming. It was humbling and sobering to hear about the hardships they’d suffered before One Horizon changed their lives – and those of their families. They can now afford to send their children and grandchildren to school and no longer live from hand-to-mouth. But it was also a fun outing – we learnt about how they care for their animals, cooked a traditional lunch together and they sang for us. A truly memorable experience and an extremely uplifting day out. Through its various tours One Horizon provides a range of humanitarian programmes. If I return to Kenya, I will definitely do another tour with them. Their guides were fantastic too – very informative and friendly. And by taking part in the tour I really felt that I was making a big difference to the lives of people. I would highly recommend taking part in one of these tours – it will be a highlight of your trip to Kenya.

Masai Magic Tour was absolutely fantastic!!!

Did the Masai Magic. So wonderful!!! Guides, Mary and Solomon were delightful and funny. We laughed the whole drive to the village. Masai family were lovely, fun and welcoming!!! I would definitely definitely do this tour, again!

Seeing the resilience of African women, up close and personal

My experience with the day tour Farm to Feast in Nairobi was one of the highlights of my month-long travel in Africa. Listening to and interacting with such resilient women, whose life stories were incredibly challenging, deepened my admiration and respect for them, their culture, and the organizations that work with them, like One Horizon. Our local guide, Solomon, was one of the kindest and most knowledgeable men I met during my travels. I highly recommend this opportunity - you really get a feel for the lives of Kenyan women, their struggles and the enterprising ways they are lifting themselves up.

We were lucky enough to participate in a One Horizon experience with "The Grannies" on the first day of our Intrepid Travel overland safari journey through Kenya and Tanzania.
