Overview

Overview

In 2015, the Egyptian government announced an extraordinary project to build a new capital city. The project is perhaps the greatest undertaking in Egyptian history and ranks with the construction of the Suez Canal and the Great Pyramid project of the ancient era in terms of its scope and cost.

This project was partly in response to the significant spike in the capital’s population since 1984. The population had increased from 8 million to over 22 million over that time. And the high levels of congestion and pollution were taking its toll on the liveability of Cairo and the productivity and health of the workforce.

  • The location of the new capital (currently known by the name the New Administrative Capital) is 28 miles away from Cairo.
  • The New Administrative Capital (NAC) will replace Cairo as the centre of Egyptian power, becoming home to the country’s governmental offices and major financial districts.
  • It will, when completed, house a population of 6-7 million people.
  • The new capital has been in construction since 2017 and some of the proposed facilities have been completed. As of 5 May 2023, 14 ministries and government entities have relocated to the New Administrative Capital.
  • 1,500 families had moved to the city as of March 2024 although the population is expected to reach 10,000 by the end of 2024.

Egypt’s Vision 2030

The capital city is considered one of the major projects for economic development and is part of a larger initiative called Egypt Vision 2030. When completed the new city will have the following:

  • A central park with artificial lakes
  • 2,000 educational institutions
  • 18 hospitals
  • 1,250 mosques and churches,
  • A 93,440-seat stadium
  • 40,000 hotel rooms
  • A major theme park
  • 90 square kilometres of solar energy farms and electric railway link with Cairo.
  • 21 Residential Districts
  • It is expected to cost over US$100 million to move the government from Cairo
