Itinerary
Hiking with the Maasai and Campfire Dinner
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi to the Ngong Hills, where open skies, rolling ridgelines, and sweeping views towards the Great Rift Valley create a magnificent natural stage. Here, your Maasai hosts welcome you personally before leading you on Hiking with the Maasai, a walk that is gentle, meaningful, and filled with conversation.
As you move across the hills, the landscape comes alive through Maasai eyes. Your guides share knowledge of plants, grazing routes, natural resources, conservation, family traditions, and the delicate balance between people, cattle, wildlife, and land. Every pause becomes an opportunity to listen, ask, photograph, and understand.
Arriving at the village, you are received with song, dance, colour, and unmistakable warmth. Guests may be dressed in traditional Maasai shuka cloth, a graceful welcome that transforms the moment from simple arrival into a shared celebration.
Lunch is enjoyed in the village in the company of your hosts, with time to sit, talk, laugh, and absorb the rhythm of daily life. Where appropriate, guests may also take part in a simple conservation gesture, such as planting shrubs or trees to support the restoration of land affected by erosion and overgrazing.
As golden light softens across the hills, the day becomes even more memorable. The evening gathers around a glowing Campfire Dinner, where food, music, dance, and storytelling create an atmosphere that is both celebratory and intimate. Conversations flow naturally from family life and rites of passage to courage, identity, resilience, humour, and the values that hold the community together.
This is the kind of evening travellers remember long after they return home: firelight, open sky, shared laughter, and the feeling of being welcomed into a world few visitors ever truly experience.

Maasai Magic Cultural Immersion
Day 2 is devoted to the heart of Maasai Magic: a full cultural immersion created for guests who want to go deeper. After breakfast, return to the Maasai community for a day of participation, discovery, and meaningful exchange, where every activity offers a more personal understanding of daily life, tradition, and identity.
A village elder introduces the values that guide Maasai life: cattle, land, water, family, respect, courage, and community. Guests learn how these precious lands are managed, how native herbs and plants are used, and how knowledge is passed carefully from one generation to the next.
The experience is warm, hands-on, and beautifully human. Guests may learn about homestead construction, join elements of village life, and spend time with Maasai women as lunch is prepared over an open fire. In this relaxed setting, stories are exchanged, skills are demonstrated, and guests are invited to create a piece of decorative Maasai beadwork to take home as a personal keepsake.
In the afternoon, meet the young Maasai warriors, or morans, who share the meaning of their rites of passage and their role as defenders of the community. Guests may be invited to try traditional skills such as spear throwing, club throwing, climbing techniques, or the famous jumping dance, all offered with warmth, humour, and encouragement.
The day closes with reflection and farewell, but the experience stays with you. Maasai Magic is found in the unexpected moments: a shared story, a gesture of welcome, the rhythm of song, the pride of a warrior, the skill of a bead worker, and the rare feeling of having been invited into something real.

A Life Changing Experience Recently my husband and I spent two weeks in Kenya as part of a group tour. Having been obsessed with the Maasai from a young age he knew he wanted to spend some one on one time with a local family and do something to give back to the local community. One Horizon was the perfect opportunity. We selected the Maasai Magic tour and were picked up at our hotel by our guides. We drove for about 45 minutes and arrived at the home of Daniel, his wife Rispa and their son Emmanuel. They could not have been more warm and welcoming. We spent time with them as a family exploring the property and learning about their lives, but we also spent time with each individually chatting and asking questions about a herding life in Kenya. We sat with Rispa and made our own (very basic) beaded bracelets. We enjoyed a light snack and also had the opportunity to purchase some of Rispa’s beadwork and crafts. Not only did we support the family but they were WAY more affordable than anywhere else on our trip. STOCK UP WHILE YOU ARE THERE! One Horizon was responsive during our planning, one time for our pick up, a wealth of information during our travel to meet the family and the vehicle was clean and comfortable. We could not have asked for a more amazing experience.

You’ve affected change to so many, it’s truly incredible.

Another inspirational day – A unique African experience in a traditional Masai village What an incredible day spent with this traditional Maasai family. They shared their stories and I listened with tears in my eyes. We spent the morning with Daniel and his son Emanuel. Daniel has 50 siblings!!! Emanuel explained the cultural journey from boyhood to manhood and his mother, later in the day, shared her experience. The practice of circumcision continues today. It is a day I will remember forever and their stories will remain in my heart. Caroline, our guide also shared her remarkable story. The work done by One Horizon is nothing short of life changing for these people. I would recommend anyone travelling to Nairobi to be a part of one of these experiences. The money paid for these trips go into the program.

This was hands down one of the highlights of our incredible trip to Kenya. My mother, my 6-year-old daughter and I were picked up at our hotel by Solomon and taken to a Maasai community in the Ngong Hills. We spent a wonderful afternoon with a local family, hearing about their lives, dancing, and learning to make beaded jewelry (or at least attempting). They were very warm and welcoming, and it felt like we made a genuine connection despite the vast cultural differences. We also got to hear about the inspiring work that One Horizon is doing in the Maasai community. I cannot recommend this highly enough!
