Overview
Light on the Horizon is a cultural tour in the Magical Kenya Signature Experience Collection – curated, unique, authentic and exceptional once-in-a-lifetime Kenyan travel experiences accredited by the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB)
On this energetic One Horizon cultural and wildlife day tour, we combine visits to two of Nairobi’s best-known wildlife conservation centres with a small-scale farming program that is changing the lives of Kenyan grandmothers. You getup-close to giraffes from a raised walkway at the Giraffe Centre, which has been instrumental in saving the Rothschild giraffe from extinction. We then spend an insightful afternoon on a cultural tour as guests meet entrepreneurial grandmothers at a grassroots social enterprise project supported by One Horizon in a rural Kikuyu community.

Wildlife conservation and changing lives
Our first stop is the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife’s famous Giraffe Centre, which has pioneered an innovative breeding programme to grow the population of the endangered Rothschild giraffe in the wild. You’ll meet the giraffes at eye level from the centre’s raised walkway, and get a comprehensive education about how we can all play a role in the conservation of habitats and the preservation of wildlife.
You then spend an engaging afternoon in the rural homes of Kenyan grandmothers, who are remarkable and inspirational women that have taken on the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren and extended families. A cultural tour that most people never get to experience. You’ll look around a pig farm where a grandmother proudly explains pig-husbandry and how her bio-gas system powers her home; an initiative supported by One Horizon and the involvement of travellers that aims at improving the livelihoods of the grandmothers by economically empowering them through small-scale farming. Then sit down with the grandmothers while they cook traditional meals and narrate their powerful stories about how the program has helped them run a sustainable business about Kenyan culture that set the rhythm of their lives and that helps keeps their families together.

Solomon & Mary were phenomenal!!!
We had the pleasure of having Solomon & Mary as our tour guides and they were very knowledgeable and phenomenal. Visiting the Giraffe Manor, Elephant Orphanage, and spending time with the Kikuyu Grandmothers at the Pig Farms gave us the ultimate experience. One that we will not forget. Thank you for making our trip to Kenya memorable not only for my wife and I, but also for our 3 kids.

A wonderful, heartwarming experience... We met three lovely grandmothers, visited their tiny farms and had a home hosted lunch. It was an amazing experience to hear these women's stories, share in meaningful conversation and even sing and dance with them.

We had the best time meeting Beatrice and Helen - it was one of the most amazing and memorable experiences we had in Africa and I cannot believe how lucky we were to spend so much time with them and hear their stories. Thank you for all the hard work you have done over the years for these families - we saw firsthand how One Horizon has changed their lives and we certainly walked away feeling inspired.

Highly recommended. One Horizon has many projects in Kenya. They do tours to support their projects. I was picked up at my hotel in Nairobi and we drove about a half hour to the pig farm of Rosemary and her family. We sat in her small family room while she talked about how difficult her life had been before One Horizon came to the rescue. They set her up as a pig farmer, providing the pigs and the feed as well as the contract with hotels, etc... I went to Helen's farm as well and visited the school which One Horizon also supports. It was a wonderful day.
