Overview
International Women’s Day In Kenya is a culture and community tour in the Magical Kenya Signature Experience Collection – curated, unique, authentic and exceptional once-in-a-lifetime Kenyan travel experiences accredited by the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB)
Each year on March 8th, One Horizon celebrates this special day by holding parties for the wonderful Kenyan women at the projects we support and you are invited. This is a rare opportunity to visit remarkable groups of women who are instrumental in building new, bright and sustainable futures for themselves, their families and their communities. There are two options to choose from; a visit to a Maasai village where the women will show you their age-old customs and their responsibilities for the family in the very patriarchal Maasai society, or a Kikuyu community where you’ll see how a farming enterprise assists grandmothers to support the many generations they care for. These experiences will give you deep insight into the customs and structures of rural Kenyan family life, and the highlight is the genuine interaction with these amazing women as we applaud their achievements at our events on International Women’s Day. Itinerary - Option 1
Marvellous Maasai Women
Connect with Kenya’s proud Maasai women on International Women’s Day in an authentic and interactive way by becoming part of the hustle and bustle of their village.
It is Maasai women who make many important family decisions and shoulder a great deal of responsibility in day-to-day life, and they build the manyatta, or family homestead, and are responsible for livestock cultivation, meal preparation, and educating their children for roles in the community.
This is a fun-filled day with singing and dancing and you will dress in a traditional Maasai Shuka cloth or ‘African blanket’ and help cook our traditional Kenyan lunch. Our International Women’s Day party celebrates the strength, courage and wisdom of Maasai women and you’ll gain an understanding of how important they are in Maasai society.
Itinerary – Option 2
Celebrating Kikuyu Grandmothers
Celebrate International Women’s Day by meeting a Kikuyu community of endearing and entrepreneurial grandmothers at a project supported by One Horizon, which has significantly improved their livelihoods by empowering them through small-scale farming.
Many Kenyan grandmothers play a vital role in raising their extended families when parents are unable to do so, and the financial constraints are extremely challenging. But thanks to our small business program, the grandmas earn a sustainable income from pig-farming to feed their families.
On this day of fun, you’ll get to know the delightful grandmas, help cook our traditional and delicious Kenyan lunch, and share much laughter and singing and dancing. On our special International Women’s Day party, you will get a real insight of the strength and resilience of these remarkable Kenyan grandmothers..

Testimonials
Michelle, CanadaUnique insights on Kenya My friends and I took The Masai Magic day trip with One Horizon in July of 2019. We were headed home from a week on safari when our flight was cancelled and we ended up with an unexpected extra day in Nairobi. One Horizon was able to put together a day trip for our small group on very short notice. Our day with One Horizon allowed us to meet a Masai family and to learn about traditional Masai practices. We had fun learning beading, singing, and dancing! But it also allowed us to connect with Kenyans on a personal level. We had the privilege of hearing Agnes's difficult personal story as the sixth wife of an elderly Masai man, learnt about Rispa's struggles to gain a measure of respect and independence, and learnt about One Horizon's work to empower Kenyan women. Caroline, the One Horizon staffer who led our group, made sure that we were comfortable and that we had our needs met on the trip itself. She also gave us insights into the daily life and daily struggles of Kenyans. Highly recommended.
Jennifer, USAOne Horizon Africa Should be On Your Itinerary! Fantastic experience! This meaningful and heartfelt experience should be a integral part of any traveler's Nairobi itinerary. Spending a half day with the beautiful and resilient grandmothers who've benefited from the generosity and ingenuity of One Horizon was an eye opening experience and also very fun, especially making chapati and feeding pigs. Even the short drive out to their village was unique escape from the huddle and bussle of the Nairobi cityscape, seeing the many businesses and farms of hardworking Kenyans. Special recognition goes to facilitator Caroline who was a phenomenal translator and guide. Fantastic!!
Rebecca, AustTop organisation merging high quality tours with life-changing charity work. Truly memorable. I had grand plans on arrival in Kenya to do a couple of the One Horizon tours, however had issues with their booking system only booking for the day after tomorrow. This led to phone calls with owner-operator Colin, who was able to accommodate me with both tours I wanted in a half-day personalised tour. I was met by Carol at my hotel and travelled to meet mothers with HIV thriving thanks to a two-year rehabilitation program that teaches them trade and entrepreneurial skills so they can set up their own business to support their families. There I also met Solomon (and Colin, briefly) and together we travelled on to meet two grandmothers thriving off pig-farming and able to support their families for the first time in their lives. I honestly could write tons about these experiences, but I will keep it to this: being a development graduate, I know what good charity and bad charity looks like. Colin gets in there and asks what is needed in the community and then makes it happen. The programscome from the community and the community thrives because of it. This is charity at its best. All of the women but particularly the warm hospitality shown by the grandmothers and Carol and Solomon over a lunch we made together, hearing stories about Kenyan life, the struggles, was probably the single best tourism experience I ever had. Carol and Solomon answered every question I had and then some, and I felt so inspired by their hard work and dedication. Travelling for another two months across Africa this tour remained my number one experience and takeaway of what Africa is. I cannot recommend One Horizon highly enough.
