A Dahabiya is a traditional two-masted sailing boat. And in Arabic it is translated as ‘a golden one’. These vessels were common in Egypt in the early part of the 19th century up until the 1870’s and were used by people for travelling and also by the Egyptian monarchy and elites for their socialising. In those days they were considered to be the first class method for travelling. Today they still represent a great way for getting around, albeit at a leisurely pace and the way to see the real Egypt. On our excursions to our communities, your Dahabiya can draw into beaches and landing places close to the villages you are visiting. It can anchor at any location along the river. This gives more options for impromptu stops and activities like lunch on the beach, swimming and other adventures. Every step of the way our guides are with you.

Five thousand years have transpired since the ancient Egyptians first produced perfume. Hieroglyphics found in Egyptian tombs dating from 3000BC verify that Egyptian priests were the earliest perfumers. And in ancient Egyptian mythology, Nefertem was the god of each morning’s creation and the god of perfumes and aromatics. Perfumes were associated with mystical functions and served as a gift from and to the Gods. Natural ingredients such as myrrh, frankincense, and cinnamon, were used to create unique fragrances. Perfumes became an important part of Egyptian life and were used by men and women.

Domesticated camels only became a part of Egypt after the Arab conquest around 200 AD as part of trade caravans from the Arabian Peninsula. Their association with ancient Egypt probably arises from the fact that camels were a part of life in North Africa. And the closeness of Egypt to these regions contributed to the perception that camels were a part of Egyptian life. Camels linked the trade and travel across the region and of course Egypt’s links to neighbouring economies. It was only in the Greco-Roman era that camels become a part of Egyptian society.

The Egyptian government’s objective was to offer its citizens and visitors a place where they could see and learn everything about their Pharaonic civilization. Its foundation stone was laid by the former President Hosni Mubarak in 2002. It is part of a new master plan for the Giza Plateau, known as “Giza 2030”. And whilst it has taken years to fruition, the wait was certainly worth it. It is the largest archaeological museum devoted to a single civilisation in the world. Its outstanding design is awe inspiring with views of the neighbouring Giza Plateau (2 kilometres away) and pyramids ever present as you wander its enormous expanse. It occupies a site of over 50 hectares (123 acres).

And central to this are the mummies of the most famous pharaohs in all Egypt which now reside at the museum.

This tour takes gives you an entire history and experience in seeing how the pyramids design and structure changed and developed and how one man built 3 pyramids. By any analysis of the facts, the Pharoah Sneferu would have to be considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of Egypt and the world. A recognition of his intellect, design and planning skills and as an innovator par excellence. Building three pyramids during his life (the 4th Dynasty 2,600 BC) would by itself, place him on a scale of achievement that only a handful of people in the world have ever attained. The pyramids that he created, at Meidum and Dahshur and which ultimately led to the construction of the Giza pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure has resulted in a legacy that has lasted 4,500 years. And yet, not many people realise that it was the skills and leadership of Sneferu and the knowledge that he acquired which led him to achieve his vision and for his family to enshrine his legacy.
