One Horizon’s Sustainable Programs in Egypt
The Turn The Soil Program (TTS) is a program which aims to enable farmers to acquire land and ultimately to support their families as well as earning an income. It’s an experience which, with travellers help, can transform lives by helping Egyptian engage back with the land.

How We’re Different
One Horizon provides more than 50 sustainable programs in Africa, aiding and assisting communities with nutrition, clean water, irrigation for farming, electricity, vocational training, and housing.
We are a non-profit, so your travel dollars go directly to improving the lives of the people you meet – the children, the young couples, and especially the seniors– who have an esteemed place in Egyptian life. By creating this model of “travel with a purpose”, we invite you, the visitor to make a hands-on, positive impact in the communities you visit and the people you meet, laugh with, and get to know. Ancient Egyptian Research Association
One Horizon Africa is a member of AERA. AERA brings together archaeologists and specialists from around the world to address questions regarding the origin, nature, and development of the Egyptian state. By becoming a member of AERA you support the training of young Egyptian archaeologists and the survey, mapping, excavation, and the analysis of archaeological sites. We encourage everyone to become a member and support the work of AERA.

One Horizon’s Sustainable Programs in Egypt – Our TTS Program
Our sustainable programs in Egypt aim to facilitate economic empowerment to vulnerable communities. And in a post Covid world, One Horizon’s programs have resonated with local Egyptian communities because of the immediate benefits they deliver. Our model of including likeminded travellers who share and goals in our work has been the hallmark of One Horizon’s leadership in this area.
Egyptians Are Reengaging with the Land
Inflation in Egypt, as it has in most third world countries, has often marginalised people further. In 2023-24 inflations was around 32%. As the cost of living increases, and with fewer employment opportunities, Egyptians have been returning to the land. To grow their food, earn an income and to bring stability to their lives are the key drivers. And with the affinity that Egyptians have to the land, it’s been a natural response to difficult circumstances.
The Cost of Renting Land Has Tripled
The cost of renting land has tripled since 2022. Literally millions of people have moved into agriculture and whilst it was always a big sector for employment, it has continued to consume more people. The government has helped by developing land for agriculture but the cost of renting the land has often been prohibitive. This is where One Horizon is stepping in to help.
Our TTS Program – Turn the Soil Program
One Horizon TTS Program provides grants to local families to be able to rent land for farming. The grants range from $500 to $1,500. For Egyptians, raising the capital is the first and hardest step in the process. This program is a straightforward, practical assistance program that delivers results – economic empowerment and a future for families. We eliminate the most difficult step.
Our Excursions to Farms Are Inspiring
Our excursions to farms bring people from all walks of life together to help each other. A genuine collaboration which enables everyone to get involved and to ‘give back’. It’s travel with a purpose. Our guests enjoy the excursions immensely. And our Egyptian families also earn an income from hosting guests. It’s a win-win situation for all. You can combine this excursion with our other tours for a totally immersive cultural experience
You Can Get Involved in Helping Egyptians
In addition to option to include a farm excursion in your travels to Egypt, you may also like to consider providing a TTS grant to a vulnerable Egyptian family. As a not-for-profit organisation your help would facilitate this program and economic empowerment to its recipients.
Inclusions
This excursion can be combined with other tours for totally immersive activities. The other tours include Khan El Khalili Bazaar, Old Cairo (Coptic and Islamic History), the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation, Stairways to Eternity (The Pyramids of Giza) and many others. ARCHAEOLOGY 2.0
Dr Mark Lehner ranks amongst the most outstanding Egyptologists of the modern era. Within a select group of Egyptologists such as Petrie, Carter, Hawass and others, Mark has earned his international reputation based on over 40 years of conducting research and excavations in Egypt. His discoveries, such as the workers village close to the Giza Pyramids, and his academic treatise and publications have contributed greatly to the world’s understanding of ancient Egypt. Mark is also the founder of the Ancient Egyptians Research Associates (AERA) whose work includes training the next generation of Egyptian Egyptologists.
Within One Horizon, training our tour guides so that they provide our clients with the most factual, up to date and insightful information draws heavily from Mark’s 40 years of research, analysis and dedication. And so, our guides remain at the forefront of current learnings and knowledge that enhances our guests Egyptian experience with us.
