Overview

Journey To The Real Africa

What could be more meaningful, more fulfilling than personally feeding families and hungry children? This is the kind of travel experience you've been looking for: sharing smiles and food in a community setting, while giving back to those less fortunate.

On this inspiring tour, you’ll visit a One Horizon community centre, where your presence will be as welcomed as the nutritious food you'll be serving. Working shoulder to shoulder, you'll meet local community leaders, helping them build better lives for their fellow Kenyans.

Memories Are Created Here

But you won't just be serving the food, you'll also be prepping behind the scenes, chopping, peeling, and cooking this hearty meal, as you swap stories and laughter with these deeply committed future leaders.

After lunch, settle in with the families and children, perhaps engaging in art projects, like face painting with the kids all the while learning about their lives. And sharing your stories with them as well.

You won't experience moments like this on a typical safari holiday. But here at the One Horizon Centre, you'll find yourself surrounded by new friends creating better futures for all of you.

A sustainable program for Kenyan families

While there are many wealthy areas in Nairobi, other districts have very high unemployment levels where challenges for the population are based around getting enough to eat. One Horizon initiates sustainable development programs in conjunction with local community leaders in needy communities, and today you will help to prepare and serve a hearty and nutritious Kenyan lunch for the community. We work alongside Kenyans who take ownership of these programs and you'll stand shoulder to shoulder with Kenyans who warmly welcome you into their community. And as part of this day, you will get to meet the local community leaders who are helping to change TO create future leaders. This tour gives great insight into family structures and life and is a cultural tour which is about seeing how local communities work together

You will have a energetic day pitching in with the chores like peeling and chopping fresh fruit and vegetables and cooking lunch of beans and ugali (a maize flour dish eaten across East Africa). You can share lunch with the community and have the opportunity interact with them and you’ll discover that they are just interested about you as you are about them. This is a unique cultural tour and travellers meet a grassroots community that they would never typically interact with on a Kenyan holiday. And it is immensely satisfying to know that your tour fees are helping the community.

Outstanding experience

Today we got to visit the drop in facility for street kids in one part of Nairobi run by One Horizon. What a privilege. We watched the kids perform some welcome items, visited their classrooms and read some stories about some Australian kids and animals, helped prepare lunch and serve it to them and participated in an art activity and face painting. Watching happy faces and learning about their plight and the great work of One Horizon from its founder and being hosted by Mary and Solomon was fantastic. I encourage you to take up the opportunity to visit when you come to Nairobi. Thanks for the experience.

One Horizon's staff are all just incredible. They just get things done in a quiet way. And they worked with me, to determine how best they could help me. They have helped me change the lives of children and you see it everyday in the good health and laughter of the children.

We will not forget the images and lasting memories of our visit with you guys. The whole family agrees that our only regret is we didn’t spend more time with the One Horizon family. This very limited experience has had an important impact on us all permanently... after seeing the work you and your team do, I now believe that angles really do exist. I mean that sincerely.

Being with the One Horizon team enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of some very complex human issues faced by the people of Kenya. One Horizon connected me to the people of Kenya, and this above all else during my trip is what I will remember forever. A big thank you to the staff of One Horizon who were my guides, my teachers, and also my friends.
